Thebes is a game of competitive archaeology. Players take on the role of archaeologists in Europe who are researching five civilisations - the Greeks, Cretans, Egyptians, Palestinians and Macedonians. Using this research, they then excavate various sites to reveal hidden treasures. Whichever archaeologist has learnt the most about a civilization can claim the greatest valued prizes through his research. The winner is of course the archaeologist who has managed to collect the most exhibitions.

Thebes is played over a period of two or three years with players performing actions that require a specific amount of time tracked through a novel movement mechanism - a 52 space board. Players then take turns depending on who is furthest back on the board (i.e. has used the least amount of time), with each action by a player taking an allocated amount of time.
