Top Ten: Easter Eggs
A closer look at some of our favourite games to discover secret items hidden amongst the cards or staring up at you on the board itself.
Warning: Spoilers ahead.
10 Robinson Crusoe: Adventure on the Cursed Island
For some punching card board is a cherished moment, for others it's a frustration to overcome before play commences. We love Portal games tongue in cheek reassurance to the latter.
9 Caverna: The Cave Farmers
Sneaky little Hobbitses. Wicked. Tricksy. False. Tucked away on the night side board of Caverna: The Cave Farmers, near to water in the mountain you can spot Gollum eyeing up the fishes.
8 Small World
Hidden away on the race banner for Wizards, you’ll find a Wizard holding a book called "Magick for Dummies". Whilst on its "In Decline" side, the book is titled "1000 Card Tricks".
The biggest event in the board gaming calendar is undoubtedly the Spiel game fair that takes place in Essen, Germany each year. Homage is paid to Essen in numerous board games including Pandemic (the capital Berlin is omitted in favour of Essen) and Ticket to Ride: Europe. But did you know on the Crossroads card in Dominion the sign points to Essen?
5 Cosmic Encounter: Cosmic Dominion
The Joker race in Cosmic Dominion has 9 tokens, 6 of which have numbers on: 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42. The significance of these numbers are LOST on most people.
The board of Belfort is full of humour and references to the publisher Tasty Minstrel Games and other games of theirs. Here though is the Robber from Settlers of Catan quietly selling the five resources to passing townsfolk.
How do the farmers of Agricola pass their time when not tending to their crops and animals? Why play board games of course! Look carefully at the tables inside some of the houses, and you'll find games of Agricola and Bohnanza (also designed by Uwe Rosenberg) laid out!
Tucked away on one of the cards is the image of a camel carrying a panda pelt as one of its goods. One of the designer's earlier games Yspahan was pitched against Zooloretto (with a panda on its cover) for awards. The inclusion of the panda pelt was a wink to the rivalry between these two games.
1 Terror in Meeple City
Terror in Meeple City is chock full of hidden treasures for the sharp eyed. Our favourite: the Ca$h n Guns game in play in one of the buildings. Also look out for: Captain America's shield, a Mutant Ninja Turtle, a Portal Companion Cube in a ball pit, a Batman signal, Godzilla doll, a meeple shaped bear rug and a tiger rug, Indiana Jones' whip and hat, a Pokemon ball, a Scream mask and much more
