Top Ten Meeples
What’s a meeple?
A meeple is the name given to the character or object representing the player in a board game. The term was first coined for the distinct player characters in the game Carcassonne. The word meeple is a mash-up of ‘meeting people’ and also ‘my people’ - which reflects our aspiration to bring people together to enjoy great board games. These are our top ten favourite meeples.
10 The Fire Fighters of Flash Point: Fire Rescue
Do you have what it takes to be a fire fighter? Enter the blazing building to save the occupants and their pets, stop the fire spreading and watch out for backdrafts and explosions. A team game for wannabe firemen and fire women.
9 The Top Hat
Surviving the cut to make the 2013 version of Monolopy, the Top Hat continues to exude class as you snap up the properties. We have a soft spot for the Little Metal Dog too.
8 The Cha Cha Chickens
Chicken Cha Cha Cha is a fun packed chicken dancing, tail feather stealing, memory game for children. This game is always a hit with kids, not least because the chickens and roosters have an undeniable cute factor.
7 Bunny Bunny Moose Moose
A slightly crazy party game, players need to make rabbit ears or moose antlers of various shapes on their heads so as to avoid the hunter. The Bunny and Moose Meeples are there just to mock you. With this game it’s difficult to know what’s better – playing, or spectating.
6 Ricochet Robots
Is it a game, is it a puzzle? We don’t care, what it is is a lot of fun. The Ricochet Robots just want to keep moving and you need to get them to their destination in the fewest moves. We gave these guys the no.6 spot just because you can’t keep a good robot down. This game also boasts the ability for an infinite number of players …maybe we should test that out one night.
5 The Creatures Of Survive!
You won’t know fear until you find yourself stranded on a tiny wooden raft on the seas of Survive! The Whale wants to capsize you, the Shark wants to eat you and the Sea Serpent, well, he just wants to capsize and eat you. Land never seemed so far away! We love this game. There’s a Giant Squid expansion too!
Designed for the fantastic Lords of Waterdeep board game, these custom-made DnDeeples are on the tiny side but they’re all the more amazing for it. Who’s your favourite? The fighter, the rogue, the cleric or the wizard? Nope, we can’t decide either.
From the board game Marrakech, Assam is the market owner, prepare for trouble if he lands on your rug. The only meeple we can think of with a fez – for that alone Assam deserves the number 3 spot. Just like that!
2 The Robber of Catan
Okay… he looks pretty innocuous , right? Don’t believe it, all your carefully worked out strategies can become unhinged with The Robber. He somehow knows when to strike so as to hit you personally the hardest. Darn him! Check out Catan and all its variations in the café. We even have a children’s version called Catan Junior (and yeah, there’s still a robber only this time he’s a Ghost Pirate…. mwwahaha!!)
